HILDA’S KITCHEN:SOME THINGS OLD, SOMETHING NEW
Hilda’s Kitchen, the restaurant on the historical Groote Post wine farm has been owner managed by Shaun and Debbie Mc Laughlin for eighteen years now. That’s a long time in the restaurant industry and it speaks to their dedication and passion for their business. The Manor House, where the restaurant is located, is filled with antiques and collectibles and tells a tale of yesteryear and times gone by. Even the Groote Post winemaker Lukas Wentzel has been in charge of winemaking at the farm for nearly two decades.
That’s a lot of collective experience and under the watchful and guiding hands of Nick and Peter Pentz, the farm has flourished and gained a reputation for its old time hospitality. However it’s not all about history and there are new releases of innovative wine styles such as the Seasalter Sauvignon Blanc and the Shiraz/Cinsaut blend called The Salt of The Earth.
The restaurant too continues to reinvent itself with new ideas and themes, especially plant based menu items in response to guests requirements and preferences. Cauliflower and Butterbean Falafels, a Roast Sweet potato salad with a peanut sate sauce and Spinach gnocchi with the spinach grown at the farm.
The stalwarts like The Old Man’s Steak Roll (considered the best in the land by many), the Pork Belly with a plum salad and the White Chocolate Cheesecake remain as well as the new current favourite, a Gourmet Lamb Bunny chow.
