JP MEYER – Gods, Men and Monsters at The Toffee Gallery

Join us on Saturday 29 June 11h30 at the Toffee Gallery for the opening of painter and printmaker JP Meyer’s exhibition Gods, Men and Monsters.

This is the artist’s tenth solo exhibition and will feature recent oil paintings on canvas and a series of monotype prints.

The works on exhibition forcefully demonstrates Meyer’s understanding of his own practice as a form of research and a way of trying to make sense of his everyday world, as he states: “Art is research.”

One aspect of Meyer’s everyday world that he explores in this exhibition, is the lives and activities of men and how society and its structures help shape and define masculinity. Drawing from the classical myth of Hercules and one of the most iconic villains of popular culture, Darth Vader, Meyer depicts a masculinity that is both benevolent and toxic at the same time.

The exhibition runs until 21 August 2019.

JP Meyer, who lives and works in Porterville in the Western Cape, was born in South Africa in June 1960. An intrepid traveller, his school career was followed by a career with South African Airways that spanned 15 years. In 1996 he left to pursue his passion for art and enrolled as a full-time student, graduating with a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) in 1999.

Since mounting his first solo exhibition at the Association of Visual Arts in Cape Town in 2003, JP has participated in many joint and group exhibitions, with SASOL New Signatures in 2003 and the Brett Kebble Awards in 2003 and 2004 seeing him achieve finalist status. His work is included in the collections of SASOL, Rand Merchant Bank, Didata, Hollards and Nandos UK.
