The 2019 Darling Wildflower Show – A Carnival of Wildflowers
Iconic Wildflower Show celebrates its 102nd year in September
Locals and visitors alike can expect the joyful sight of masses of brightly coloured flowers at the 2019 Darling Wildflower Show, happening from 20 to 22 September this year. Themed ‘A Carnival of Wildflowers’, the show takes place when most of the glorious wildflowers in the region are in bloom, lending an optimistic carnavalesque atmosphere to the town and its surrounds.
Darling-based artist Nicolaas Maritz will act as show designer this year, and is tasked with reflecting the rainbow-coloured season in all its aspects. Maritz is an expert at creating interesting landscaping layouts, and has successfully designed and managed a number of local wildflower shows in the past.
“This year, I’ve decided to emphasise bright flower arrangements, but with a contemporary twist,” says Maritz. “I am passionate about the conservation of the local Renosterveld habitat, and believe that this is a cause best promoted through positive public reaction to attractive and informative displays at the flower show.”
Visitors to the show should keep an eye open for some interesting surprises, such as the inclusion of a mythical Florasaurus: a plant-loving dinosaur playfully hiding in the shrubbery of one of the landscaped flower-show sections.
The Darling Wildflower Show is an outing that aims to entertain young and old. Tickets to the show include access to: • The Landscaped Hall depicting the flowers of the area in their natural habitat, • A Craft & Gourmet Food Market, • A Veteran Tractor/Car display • An entertainment tent featuring live music from local acts • A shuttle service from the show grounds to local attractions • Safe and secure parking for vehicles.
With more than a hundred food and craft stalls planned for the weekend, everyone’s taste buds and shopping needs will be catered for! Kids can have loads of fun in the playpark area, with entertainment ranging from face-painting to rides, while adults can relax in the Mini Wine Route Tent.
The show celebrates an integral part of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom, which is comprised of Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld, and Strandveld. More than 1 200 different species of flowers can be found in these habitats. Your entrance fee to the Darling Wildflower Show will help to conserve our endangered floral kingdom for future generations. Join us at the Darling Wildflower Show and contribute to conservation in our area!
